As an author, trying to decide what platforms, apps, and services to use to sell yourself and your books can be overwhelming. We firmly believe that Book+Main is an essential part of an author’s marketing toolkit, and that why we want to make your experience with us as positive and as easy as possible. To help with that, we’ve compiled a list of our most frequently asked AUTHOR questions; readers, if you’re looking for FAQs to help you adapt to Book+Main, click HERE.

ABOUT BOOK+MAIN

What is Book+Main?

Book+Main is a discovery tool—a “book search engine”, if you will. Designed to help readers and authors connect, it allows readers to sample your work via Bites—excerpts from your books, bonus content, deleted scenes and so on—and decide if it’s right for them.


How is Book+Main different from other social media sites?

Our platform is not a social media site, but rather a discovery tool. Although there are some aspects that are, on their surface, similar to some social media platforms, Book+Main is not diluted with other genres, brands, news, politics, etc. It’s designed by romance readers for romance readers, so books are, and always will be, our main priority.


With so many other places to post, why choose Book+Main?

Authors who have visited our Bitecamp website—author training program—report that they spend less than one hour per month on Book+Main, and that means you have more time for writing! Plus, since we are a romance-only site, you’re not competing with other genres for exposure. Our platform will provide more than the 24-hour relevance (at best) you’ll get from social platforms and we have a hyper-focused audience.


Not only that, we will never stifle your reach as a way of making money. This means that what you post remains as searchable and visible two years after you post as it is on the day you post it. And, by being upfront about how we monetize, adding Book+Main to your budget is not a burden.


We pride ourselves on being forward thinking and ensuring our site will be nimble, able to anticipate the ever-changing needs of this industry, and growing with it—if not paving the way in some areas.


Is B+M affiliated with Amazon?

We have an Amazon affiliate account, but beyond that, no. Additionally, when you’re adding books to your profile, we will ask for ISBN or ASIN {since some authors don’t have ISBNs}, and we also use AWS {Amazon Web Services} for cloud hosting, because they’re amongst the most reliable out there. That is as far as our relationship with Amazon stretches.


Do I have to discount my books to use Book+Main successfully?

Nope! Our readers are buying based on your work and how it fits with their preferences. Hook them with your excerpts, and they’ll gladly pay full price. Any reader study will tell you that content is the preferred method of readers in choosing their next book, yet most marketing platforms serve up blurbs and covers . . . not Book+Main.


Are Indie Authors Welcome?

YES! Book+Main is designed to be used by ALL romance authors—indie, traditionally published, hybrid, established, new. We welcome romance authors from across the spectrum, because diversity is one of our core values.

What is a Bite?

A Bite is actual content. An excerpt, a deleted scene, bonus material, etc. Bites can be from WIPs, already published books, or content exclusive to Book+Main. Think of it this way: if you wouldn’t put it in a book, don’t put it in a Bite. Save your sales and cover reveals for Posts. (See below for more information on Posts.)


How long are Bites?

Although there isn’t a set minimum or maximum Bite length, we recommend that you aim for somewhere between 500-1,500 words. That seems to be a sweet spot for a quick read and enough of a taste for a reader to either want to find other related Bites by the same author or simply buy the book.


Can multiple Bites be posted for each book?

You can post as many Bites per book as you’d like. We do, however, restrict author posts to 3x Bites in any 24-hour period, and ask that you not post the same Bite multiple times, because we feel that quality trumps quantity. We want those who are thoughtful about content not to be drowned out by spammers.


What are Posts?

Posts are cover reveals, teasers, giveaways, inspirational pictures, etc., and can be found in the Community section of Book+Main Bites. You can link your Posts to Bites and to your books. They are similar in content and purpose to what you are used to on other social media platforms and are a great way to interact with readers.


Can you schedule Posts?

Currently, Posts cannot be scheduled, however, they can be posted from either the Book+Main app or your browser, which means you can post on the go.


What are flame ratings and how do they work?

All Bites are rated by the author with a 1-5 flame rating. The higher the flame, the hotter the Bite. This doesn’t rate the overall content of the book, just the content you have shared. Book flame ratings can also be set, and this is something you can do in your Dashboard, by clicking on “My Books” and editing your book’s information.


What is the Community Feed?

The Community feed is the place to visit to see what people are sharing! Your Posts and the Bites you share from your fellow authors will be added to the Community Feed of anyone following you. Meanwhile, you will see what the authors, blogs, and readers you are following have shared. It’s a great place to find like-minded users and to get a feel for what people are loving at any given moment.


What is the Discover Feed?

This is where readers find new authors and content. The Discover feed caters to a reader’s likes, such as favorite genres and desired flame rating (chosen at registration and editable via their profile settings). If your Bites are complementary to their choices, your content will show up in their Discover feed.


Will readers be able to add their own Bites or Posts?

No, on Book+Main Bites, authors are Content Creators. Readers can share their favorite Bites along with a short summary on why they’ve chosen to share it, however, they are not able to create new ones.


Can readers control the types of books they choose?

Yes. When they sign-up for a Book+Main account, they are given the option to select their favorite genres and desired Flame Rating. This allows readers to curate their feed by removing Bites that don’t match their needs. Genres and Flame Rating are editable via their profile settings.

COST INFORMATION

Aside from the monthly fee, do you plan to charge authors to add content?

No. Authors are charged a subscription fee to be able to create Bites and post in the Community feed, and we guarantee that there are no hidden costs for visibility, searchability, or reach. What is the cost to authors for Book+Main? What is the cost to readers?

Readers are not charged for an account with Book+Main, and never will be. Authors are charged a subscription fee of $9/mth or $99/yr to be able to create Bites and post in the Community feed.

TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION

I entered my email address incorrectly when registering for Book+Main. Can you update it for me?

Yes, please send an email to support@bookandmain.com with the subject line “Incorrect Email Address” and please include your username *and* the correct email address within the body of the email.

I can’t login to my account anymore, where I was able to previously. What should I do?

Try using your username to login to your account. This is different to your email address. If that does not work, please click “Forgot Password”. If you are still experiencing trouble, please email support@bookandmain.com and include your username and email address, along with a brief description of the problem you are experiencing.

I registered as an author but cannot find where to post Bites. Can you help me?

All author accounts must go through the verification process, which can take up to 7 days to complete. Once you have signed up for Book+Main, you will receive access to the site as a reader, which gives you time to explore and familiarize yourself with Book+Main. Once your account is verified, you will receive an email confirmation and be given access to your author dashboard. From there, you can post Bites and Posts, add and edit your books, and learn more about Bitecamp.

The image I am uploading has no text, yet when I try to post, I see an error message stating that it does. Why?

The filter we have in place to identify text can be a little sensitive. Please try resaving or cropping your image and uploading it again. If you are still experiencing an issue, please email support@bookandmain.com and include your username and email address, along with a copy of the image you are trying to upload.

I posted three Bites yesterday and only two today, but it is telling me I have reached my three Bite limit for the day. What do I do?

The Book+Main clock works on a 24-hour basis. This means you cannot post more than three Bites within any 24-hour period. Check to see the time of your last posted Bite from yesterday—if it was less than 24-hours ago, you’ll need to wait a little while longer before you can add another Bite.

I didn’t realize that my username would be public and would like to change it. Can I do that?

Yes, usernames can be changed via the desktop site by visiting your profile and clicking “Edit Profile”. However, if you have any questions or encounter any issues, please email support@bookandmain.com.

I made an error with my username and would like to have it corrected. Is that possible?

Yes, usernames can be changed via the desktop site by visiting your profile and clicking “Edit Profile”. However, if you are unable to log into your account because of an incorrect user name, please email support@bookandmain.com.

I would like to delete my account but cannot see an option to do so. What do I do?

Before you go, consider transferring to a free author account. This allows you to keep all of your Bites and books in place for future readers to discover and also allows you to add new books to your profile as you release. Keep in mind that Bites are still discoverable days, weeks, months, and years after they’ve been posted, so you will see reap the rewards of your hard work, even if you are no longer creating new content.

If you’d still like to delete your account, however, please visit your profile in your web browser (not mobile) and click on “Edit Settings”. At the bottom, you can choose to delete your account. This cannot be undone, so please proceed with that knowledge.

I signed up as a reader but am now a published author and would like to change my account. How do I do that?

Congratulations! Please send a PM to the Book+Main Facebook Page, and make sure to include your username, email address, and a link to one of your books on a major e-retailer, such as iTunes or Amazon. Please Note: if you have not yet published your book, and do not have an Amazon pre-order, you will need to wait until after your book is live to upgrade your account.

If you do not use Facebook, please email us at support@bookandmain.com so we can chat about other options for verifying your account and upgrading you to an Author profile.

I received an email stating that there was a problem with one of my Bites. Why?

In order to keep Book+Main content-based and fair for all users, we have in place several requirements for posting Bites. Please visit Bitecamp on your Author Dashboard for more information. If you are unsure, you can email us at support@bookandmain.com and ask for assistance. We are always happy to help!

I am having trouble with my account, what do I do?

Please email support@bookandmain.com and include in your message your Book+Main username, email address, and any additional info you can provide on the problem you are experiencing. Screenshots and browser information are vital to trouble-shooting the problem ASAP, so if you are able to provide those, please do!

I have feedback/suggestions to make Book+Main even better, where should I send it?
